In no particular order here are my top 10 kpop songs released in 2020!
- “God’s Menu” by Stray Kids
A full blown masterpiece, makes Mozart roll in his grave, 5 star michelin… just wow! Honestly this song makes it into my top five songs ever. Catchy lyrics, beat, and dance. This makes me want to get up and actually do my schoolwork. OOF and Felix’s voice when he raps 10/10. The whole album they put out this year must be streamed by every person on this planet because it is musical excellence. Stray Kids world domination.
- “Cry For Me” by Twice
The fact that this song was almost not going to be released just makes me wonder what other types of masterpiece tracks JYP has hidden in his pocket. Every time I hear this song I feel like I should be under the dark academia tag on Tumblr. It truly fits the aesthetic of its own cover. I absolutely ADORE this song! Let’s not forget the album they put out this year with an honorable mention of the song ‘I Can’t Stop Me’.
- “How You Like That” by Blackpink
“LOOK AT YOU NOW LOOK AT ME!” My future go-to karaoke song. I will belt this out at any point of the day, anywhere. Everything about this is perfect. In the first few beats it’s like you’re being prepared for a battle or something. The bass really captures you into the song. Jennie starts to sing then BOOM, the beat drops and they hit with that ddu-du ddu-du du… just kidding… but not really. Their dance break filled with power and sass feels like they are personally attacking you, and I am so okay with that LOL. Then at the end when the beat completely changes and your starstruck by the girls dancing. They have completed their mission and you just have to like it at that point. Blackpink also put out an album this year called ‘The Album’ and I will say proudly I have listened to the whole album maybe over 100 times.
- “Dis-ese” by BTS
Now when it comes to BTS, there’s not much to say other than GIVE THESE BOYS THEIR GRAMMY ALREADY!! They gave us an album at the beginning of the year and now one at the end of the year. Both insanely successful. My favorite track on the ‘BE’ album is ‘Dis-ease’. My oh my, when the bridge of the song hits I truly transcend into the astral plane. BTS brings brilliance from their lyrics, production, dancing, every aspect really. They are legends and their music will be played for years and years and years and well should I keep going because I think you get the point.
- “Black Swan” by BTS
Black Swan is a part of the first album BTS put out in 2020. This song really gets everyone in the feels. The beat is somehow so poetic and it speaks for itself. Jimin’s dancing in the music video demonstrates true art and compliments the song. The first time I heard this song I cried and I am one not to cry at sentimental things, but Black Swan will grasp your heart and hold it close. Honestly I could ramble about this song and concept for hours on end, but I don’t think anyone wants to sit through that. The Mona Lisa would be jealous of this song because it knows it should be hung up in the Louvre instead. (Can you even hang a song.. Oh well)
- “Make A Wish” by NCT U
I would first like to start off by thanking the director of the MV for having the boys hang elegantly off a chandelier thingy because woooooooooooooooowwwwwww. I will play this song (which is a birthday song) on my birthday, the day after, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, and every other day of the year I did not mention. The whistle type beat is beyond catchy and the choreography is perfect. The vibes and energy this brings would cure the world of anything negative if we all just played it on repeat as a society.
- “Daechwita” by Agust D
I’m just gonna let this one sit and marinate. IYKYK.
- “Blue Hour” by TXT
Blue hour is such a feel good and happy song. Everytime I hear it a smile blooms across my face and I can’t help but dance. The MV and stage concepts help paint the dreamy wonderland you will go to when listening to Blue Hour. I think the TXT really hit the nail on the head with this song in regards to finding their aesthetic. I don’t think any other group could have pulled off this beat and concept.
- “Not Shy” by ITZY
ITZYYYYYYYYYY. The mitochondria of the cell honestly. This song is constantly playing in the back of my head. I will catch myself singing Not Shy unconsciously. The girls dancing skills are really put to the test with this super intense choreo and of course they got an A+ on it. I have such high hopes for Itzy and their future. Every one of their singles take the kpop world by storm. I’m a MIDZY FOREVER!!
- “Dolphin” by Oh My Girl
No questions asked… just Soobin doing this dance.
